Some of you may know who Lewis Howes is. For those of you who don’t, he is the host of the popular School of Greatness podcast, author of The School of Greatness and The Mask of Masculinity. His podcast changed the course of my life and encouraged me to pursue my dream of starting a business with the sole purpose of empowering people to be the best version of themselves.

I recently attended his annual Summit of Greatness in Columbus, Ohio. It’s hard to put into words just how amazing and inspiring the whole experience was. I had never been around so many people with positive mindsets who are looking for ideas and inspiration to make a positive impact on the world. I made friends, connected with other health and wellness professionals, met some influential public figures, and walked away with more lessons about life than I can even count from some amazing public speakers.

I am going to do my best to share the ideas and thoughts that I believe are most inspiring and thought-provoking so that you too can start your journey towards pursuing your dream-whatever that may be.

Let me start with some key things to understand about your journey from Jay Shetty. We tell ourselves lies that we are not good enough. This thought is the silent killer of dreams, so “turn your can’ts into cans and your dreams into plans.” Even after starting my business earlier this year, I have let self-doubt, fear of failure and judgment stop me from taking action. It has paralyzed my progress many times along this journey. Now, I focus on changing my mindset day-in and day-out. I tell myself every single day that I can do this, and this is my life’s purpose. I have embraced the “I AM” mentality that Dr. Eric Thomas talked about. I am whoever you think that I think I am. I am going to make a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of others.

According to Jay Shetty, one truth we need to learn is that you can’t be anything you want, but you can be everything you are. As Lindsey Stirling said, “if you don’t actively decide who you want to be, you give others the power to choose for you.” For many years I struggled with who I was. This left me feeling lost without a sense of direction or purpose in life. I simply did what I could to fit in socially because I struggled with acceptance from peers and my own identity. As you might imagine, it severely impacted my emotional and physical health.

Over the past several years, I have identified my values and focused on filling my life with good in order to crowd out the bad. I’ve started to define my core definition of myself, which ultimately gives you the power to make a difference. I love this quote from Lindsey Stirling’s speech; “By finding the courage to be ourselves, we gain the power to make a difference.”

Fitness trainer and choreographer Shaun T really embodies this message. He has found the courage to really let his authentic self shine in his work motivating people to exercise in his dance and workout videos. I personally bought one of his videos so I could learn how to dance for my wedding last year. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t able to help my dance moves. Nonetheless, he gave an amazing talk on transformation and is such a kind-hearted person. You can tell he truly cares about others when you talk to him.

I’ll share his six keys to self-transformation from his talk.

  1. Get uncomfortable. Put yourself in positions and places that get you out of your comfort zone. That is the only way to grow as a person.
  2. Be full-out committed. You can’t make a true transformation unless you are fully committed to it. You need the ability to want to succeed even if you have failed before. You let your failures define you if you don’t try and succeed again.
  3. Be flexible and find another way. As Amy Purdy states, ” borders and obstacles in our life can either stop us in our tracks or force us to get creative.” There are always going to be roadblocks on your road to transformation such as a new child, work and personal commitments, etc.  The question is, do you let them become an excuse, or do you find creative ways to overcome them?
  4. Creativity requires 100% authenticity. Learn what works for you and do it that way. This goes back to really being honest with who we are, not what we want to be.
  5. Be positively selfish. You need self-love in order to transform. Work on filling up your cup, so that you have enough to give to others. You can’t go on this journey if you are constantly on empty from putting everyone else’s needs above your own.
  6. Feel it and go crazy. I honestly am having a hard time trying to express what this means. I think you just need to watch one of his work out videos to understand what he means by this.

My intention is to guide you during your journey towards self-transformation.

I had the pleasure of meeting my mentor and coach this past year who has helped guide me along this journey of starting this company. He is the one and only, Fit Pharmacist, Dr. Adam Martin. I wouldn’t be where I am today without his guidance and inspiration. Check out his website in the link above! He has a ton of great resources and a new podcast available.

Look for part two to this blog coming up in several weeks where I dive into lessons in nutrition and parenthood with Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Shefali Tsabary!
